Flash, bang, wallop, what a picture: animal snappers not subject to copyright

By guest columnist Cleland Thom
US copyright chiefs have announced that they don’t give a monkeys about photos taken by animals.

They have just issued new regulations saying that copyright doesn’t apply unless images have been created by a human.

The US Copyright Office issued the guidelines after being badgered by people who wanted to assert copyright on images created by creatures.

They included a request from a wildlife photographer who wanted copyright on a selfie taken by a monkey. And another enthusiast took the department to tusk when they turned down rights on a mural painted by an elephant.

The new rules say the Copyright Office will not register works produced by nature, animals, or plants.
